A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the South Pacific on Friday, southeast of Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake had a depth of 38 kilometers (23 miles). This event triggered a regional tsunami warning.
Tsunami Warning
The US National Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami alert for coasts located within 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) of the epicenter which lay between Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia. The US tsunami warning system said waves of one meter were possible in Vanuatu, while waves of up to 0.3 meters above the tides were possible for Fiji, New Caledonia and Kiribati.
New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency tweeted that it is assessing whether the quake “poses any tsunami threat to New Zealand”. New Zealand’s civil defense agency issued an advisory saying they expected New Zealand coastal areas to experience strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore.
